Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana, Horizon House announce merger

Indianapolis, IN

Indianapolis-based nonprofits Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana and Horizon House announced Tuesday that they have entered an agreement to merge the two organizations.

A timetable for completing the merger was not disclosed.

Both organizations share the similar mission of helping people who face barriers to becoming economically self-sufficient.

“Together, the two organizations will grow and expand the services offered,” they said in a written statement. “The goal is to meet neighbors where they are and provide hope and housing opportunities for more Hoosiers as individuals families work toward reaching their goals and long-term self-sufficiency.”

Horizon House, founded in 1988, is a daytime-only homeless shelter at 1033 E. Washington St., that provides services to the homeless such as health care, mental health services, storage, laundry and job training. It serves more than 5,000 homeless people a year.

According to its latest Form 990, Horizon House had total assets of $12.7 million and 112 employees at the end of 2024.

Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana, founded in 1930, offers a variety of employment, education and health services to help individuals become employable. It operates more than 75 retail locations, as well as contract manufacturing services, charter schools for adults and youth, a maternal-child health program and a childcare center.

The Indiana Goodwill organization employs about 5,200 people and had total assets of $295 million in 2024.

“We are extremely excited to join forces with Horizon House to help scale the amazing work that has been done for almost four decades here in Indianapolis,” Kent Kramer, president and CEO of Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana, said in written remarks. “The need for housing, day services and permanent supportive housing continues to grow for many in Indianapolis. This blending of our resources positions us well to proactively address these issues.”

Goodwill said it has selected Lillian Herbers-Kelly as the new senior director of Horizon House. Herbers-Kelly has served as Horizon House’s director of housing since 2018.

“Horizon House has always been a place where people experiencing homelessness can find help, hope, and dignity,” Sherry Seiwert, Horizon House board chair, said in written comments. “This merger with Goodwill allows us to keep that promise—and grow it—so we can serve even more neighbors in need.”
